Le Centre Hospitalier de la Vallée-de-l'Outaouais

Challenge

Le Centre Hospitalier de la Vallée-de-l'Outaouais was born out of a forced merger between two very different hospitals, resulting in one healthcare system with two sites. Despite facing a number of merger related issues that had captured all of the staff's resources and attention, compounded by the challenge of having no established major gift program, it was decided that the new foundation would launch a $5 million capital campaign. Realizing the ambitiousness of this project, the foundation approached KCI to help ensure that the campaign got off to the right start.

Campaign Management

Having managed both large and small campaigns in all sectors, KCI understands the value of laying a strong platform for a campaign to be successful. With a focus on providing expert advice and guidance catered to the hospital's specific needs, and an established connection to the community, KCI was in an ideal position to partner with the foundation to ensure a successful campaign.

Objective

Taking into account that the foundation had little experience in managing fundraising endeavors of this magnitude, KCI's overall objective was to put in place the necessary measures for the foundation to bolster it's donor base. Building strong support from local corporations and enlisting notable area residents as volunteers would be of paramount importance.

Methodology

Before gaining campaign support from outside parties, it was crucial that the foundation win the trust and backing of the staff who, still reeling from the organizational re-alignment, held strong allegiance to their respective hospitals. In order to build the necessary cohesion, KCI set about building consensus, ensuring that each hospital had equal say in all matters, from the development of the case for support through to strategic planning. After gaining overwhelming support from staff at all levels, the campaign quickly began to build momentum. KCI was able to assist the foundation in establishing long-term relationships with many local corporations, and even created a Century Donor's Club for those making lead gifts to the campaign. We also put in place the first gift agreement between donors and the hospital, which enabled the foundation to move forward with verbal gifts and follow up on deliverables more easily.

Outcome

In just 24 months, the campaign surpassed its $5 million objective and had taken Le Centre Hospitalier de la Vallée-de-l'Outaouais to a new level of development. Over the course of the campaign, the foundation met many milestones, receiving the largest single gift in its history-ten times the amount of any previous gift, and built such an active donor base that they were able to hire a permanent major gifts officer.
